Questions and Answers:
By Hannah from Lawrence, Kansas on January 6, 2012
I just received this filter and in the instruction manual it says that you cannot plug into an extension cord or power strip. The filter has two plug-ins and we only have one outlet by the aquarium so it is not possible to NOT use a power strip. Why is it not recommended for you to use a power strip?
By Customer Service on January 9, 2012

Answer:
Greetings Hannah,

This is a good question. Not everyone has a ‘Heavy-Duty’ extension cord, or a surge protector and not everyone reads a product's manual.

The line you have quoted from the manual of your PF40-UV is for safety. Unfortunately it is common for an entire aquarium system to be plugged into a single power source. This is unsafe. Power draw should be spread out evenly amongst power supply.

It is up to the end user to use safe judgement.

Heavy-Duty extension cords are a good choice as well as surge protectors. Do not forget to drip-loop!

If you have any further questions please let us know.

hey guys was just wondering what would be best for my 90 Gallon tank that has 4 sharks in it, im just running a plain filter from aquatech and it's working but i wanna upgrade to bigger better things, any suggestions please ??
By Customer Service on October 9, 2012

Answer:
Hello Curtis,

We have received you recent product inquiry regarding a bigger filter for your 90 gallon aquarium.

The best unit we off for a 90 gallon aquarium is the DF-300 canister filter. Each unit includes biological filtration media and mechanical filtration media. Below is a link for the DF-300.
http://www.truaqua.com/aquatop-canister-filter-df-300.html

If you would like to run a power filter (hang-on style) we recommend the PFE-9. Each unit includes biological filtration and replaceable filter cartridges filled with activated carbon. The PFE-9 also includes an optional surface skimmer that skims the surface of the water keeping it clean and promotes gas exchange. Below is a link to the PFE-9.

I have this filter for a month now and i've notice that Algae develop around the base of the uv light.
I thought UV light prevents Algae growth.
Enlighten me on this!
By Customer Service on May 17, 2012

Answer:
Hello Charles,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a PF40-UV. Well, this is a good question and we have a good answer. The algae you are seeing exists at the base because the blue plastic absorbs most, if not all of the UV Rays.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

how and where is the biological media? can i put media from my current HOB in this one to prevent cycling? 29 gallon
By Customer Service on November 27, 2012

Answer:
Hello Brenda,
On the PF40-UV power filter, the biological media is located right before the spillway on the filter. Also, you can transfer your current biological media to the PF40-UV without any problems. We recommend rinsing the filter with de-chlorinated water prior to installing the unit on your tank.

Thank you!

I'm confused w/ the different pics. Does the UV light fit just inside the round black part or does is it actually tall enough to see through the clear tank? Also, is there enough room to put extra carbon pouch or ceramics in it to help w/ chemical/ biological filtration? How much room is there for extra media? I currently use the Penguin 100 w/ Bio-wheel. I have a 10 gallon tank and it is cloudy and has green algae growing on the decorations.
By Customer Service on May 29, 2012

Answer:
Hello Nathan,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding the PF40-UV hang-on style UV Filter. The UV Bulb and Quartz Sleeve are contained inside a black chamber and cannot be seen directly. The unit's filter chamber does allow for the addition of Ceramic Rings for additional Biological Filtration. Each filter insert includes Activated Carbon. If you would like to add extra Activated Carbon to the unit, we recommend opening the blue filter insert and adding more Activated Carbon there.

Regarding the current status of you 10 gallon aquarium, cloudy water & green algae; the PF40-UV will be a great addition to your current filtration system. The 7W UV Sterilizer will definitely help with free-floating algae and bacterial blooms. The Surface Skimmer will improve oxygen levels and help keep the surface of the water cleaner.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Does the UV shield need to be cleaned? Does the black cover come off?
By Customer Service on December 14, 2012

Answer:

The UV shield on our PF-UV series of hang-on filters should be cleaned as part of your routine maintenance of the filter. The shield can be removed by firmly pulling straight up on it, exposing the bulb and quartz sleeve. Be sure to unplug the unit first so that you are not exposed to the UV. Also use extra care when putting the shield back into the unit.

Thank you!

When the "PF40-UV Power Filter (HOB) With UV Sterilization" sits on the rim of the tank, how low (inches) does the "intake tube / surface skimmer / connect pipe / strainer" reach into the tank?

And how many hours is the uv bulb rated for?
By Customer Service on December 27, 2012

Answer:
Hello Dan,
From the rim of the tank, the intake tube on the PF40-UV power filter can extend down 9-5/8 inches or 12 inches depending if you use all of the piping. The UV bulb is rated at 8000 hours.

Thank you

PF40-UV power filter HOB
September 25, 2014
Purchased - shipped - received in early September '14. Installed same day (30 minutes), two days later, THE CLEAREST FISH TANK on the block. WOW…I can't believe I've tried everything to clear up the green water and this $50 device hit a home run in 48 hours. I'll be up sizing my fish tank in the near future and will be only buying from Tru Aqua for now on. Screw the PetCo and Pet Smarts of the world. TruAqua is where's it's at. Truly unbelievable results. A must BUY.
Pros:
Easy to install, read instructions carefully. Works great.
Cons:
I would have bought this thing years ago…You need youtube testimonials LIKE yesterday.

A TERRIFIC FILTER
December 12, 2013
I'm using the PF-40 in a 36 gallon bowed tank. It is a wonderfull unit. The water is clear of suspended solids, and algee. All the fish are healthy, and happy. From the moment I got the PF-40 I never liked the enclosed filter cartridge. I looked the around the local stores and discovered the Whisper Bio-Bag to be a near perfect fit. The combination of the PF-40 and the Bio-Bags is working for me, and working great.

Back Hanging UV filter
November 13, 2013
I let one of my 55 gallon fish tanks turn pea green, I installed. the Aquatop 40 UV filter and I left my other filter on the tank and in 5 days the tank when from green to clear. I would recommend this filter, I will be buying more of the for all of my fish tanks, I have one word for this filter. "Awesome."
Pros:
Cleaned the tank in 5 days and my tank was a nasty green color hard to see the fish.
Cons:
Little tricky to get working with the skimmer and there was some charcoal bits in where the in-let to connect to the impeller and it would not connect, just make sure that area is clean and clear.

Incredible filter
July 23, 2013
I had just set up a new 30 gallon saltwater tank and was waiting for it to cycle. My filter seized up on week 2, just after adding live rock. I ordered the Fluval PF-40UV after reading the reviews and it arrived within a few days. It was very easy to assemble and I had it running within 10 minutes. I thought that my tank was clear, especially since it had only been running for 2 weeks, but within 48 hours I was pleasantly surprised to see how much difference that 48 hours with the Fluval made. I checked the filter and could see the results that had been removed from the water. Someone else said it best in their review...it was so clear it looked like the aquarium was filled with air instead of water.
Pros:
Easy set up Quick shipping Only filter with built in UV
Cons:
None found

poor packaging
June 21, 2013
I really like this filter. Packaging sucks. I have 3 of these and 2 of them arrived shattered. I am still trying to get some compensation from Somethingphishy, The filter from TruAQUA was also damaged but TruAQUA and I communicated by Gmail with the result that I have a new case on the way. I would highly recommend this filter and TruAQUA . Aqua Top needs to do a better job of packaging as they are the manufacturer.
Pros:
Has mechanical, chemical, biological and U V filtration in an easy to use hang on filter
Cons:
poor packaging. needs stronger heavier plastic in main case

Best product i've used.
May 27, 2012
Excellent product. Works exactly as it is designed to and I can personally testify that it does keep my 40 Gal Aquarium crystal clear. The Filter is encased in a plastic case which is easily opened for cleaning or changing of the activated carbon. This filter also allows you to adjust how much activated carbon it holds. You can add more or less depending on your needs. It is extremely user friendly and ranks high on my best products ever in the aquarium category. Since I purchased this product I have seen a positive behavioral change in my fish. The UV light keeps unwanted bacterial and parasites at bay and allows for a wonderful experience allowing you to spend more time enjoying your aquarium and less time maintaining it.
Pros:
Durable, Needs Little Upkeep, Easy To Clean, Easy to use, Effective, Works Perfectly, Quiet, An absolute must have
Cons:
No Cons at all
Best Uses:
Tropical Fish, Small Tanks, Small medium size tanks

Awesome Product
May 6, 2012
I owned this product for 5 months now and have been though the trials and all I can say is wow. This filter is quiet and it's easy to change the filter pads. They just slide up and slide a new one down. The chamber in front of the UV light, I added 10 or so ceramic rings to grow a bacteria colony that I never touch, great addtion. Also since the UV light is a separte plug, (a plus) I cycle the UV light "on" at night only with a timer. I have a newer tank so I don't need to over steralize the water column, it gives my tank a cool blue moonlight glow. A Hang on Back (HoB)filter with the benefits of UV steralization at an afordable cost.
Pros:
Easy To Clean, Quiet, Durable, Needs Little Upkeep, Effective

UV Sterilization Really Works.
March 18, 2012
I really like the idea behind this product and I use multiple UV sterilization canisters in my 37 tank system. However, the hang on filter requires two power outlets to hook up and run. This is a little inconvenient in a large system set up. The UV light transformer on it's power line is heavy and hard to mount behind each tank. The UV really works and is invaluable for keeping a healthy tank full of growing fry.
Pros:
Effective, Durable, Quiet, Easy To Clean, Needs Little Upkeep
Cons:
Needs two outlets to run
Best Uses:
Tropical Fish

algae bloom
December 15, 2011
The tank was so green from the algae bloom you couldn't see to the back of my 75 gallon aquarium and I'm not exaggerating. I had a Penquin 330 going but it couldn;t get rid of the bloom. I tried 2 different algaecides but they did absolutely nothing. I thought maybe a skimmer would help and bought a SubCurrent skimmer, but to no avail.I happen to read a copy of my Tropical Fish International and they had a article on the UV lamp and how it gets rid of Algae Bloom. Then I remembered the TRUAQUA PFUV40, so I ordered it after installing, it took 9 days to clear the tank. I was truly amazed at the terrific job the PFUV 40 did with my 75 gal tank. I also suspect if the tank was like a 40 gallon it would have worked even faster. I just wish I had taken before and after pixs..A very satisfied customer
Pros:

Cons:
None

Simple to use-right out of the box
November 22, 2011
The plastic lid/cover needs a gasket in the plastic channel. It rattles from water turbulance/vibration. It is annoying, but I still love the filter and UV. It works great so far, and the set-up was effortless. I use it on a 55gal with a wet/dry filter, so it's not my primary filter, but it does contribute to sparkling clear water.
Pros:
Needs Little Upkeep, Effective, Easy To Clean
Cons:
Annoying vibration
