Questions and Answers:

Will a uv kill ick in a reef tank?
By Customer Service on December 19, 2011

Answer:
This is a very good question but requires a little bit of explanation. Cryptocaryon irritans, commonly called Maine Ich (MI), can be tricky to alleviate from a host as well as a marine aquarium system.

Yes, an appropriately chosen UV Sterilizer will terminate ‘Ick’ while in a free-floating/swimming form. If C. irritans is not in the water column, a UV Sterilizer is unable to do much. With this being said, the life stages of C. irritans are important to understand before determining treatment.

Let’s begin with C. irritans when we can actually see it, on a host. This is typically illustrated by the all-too-familiar white, salt-looking specks, especially near the gills. C. irritans may feed on its host for several days, possibly a week or two before leaving the host. After leaving the host C. irritans enters the water column and is briefly in a free-floating/swimming state for a few hours, usually no more than ten hours. Shortly thereafter, C. irritans finds refuge in aquarium substrate, porous rock and décor. While in hiding, C. irritans begins to encyst. Division inside the cysts yields hundreds of daughter parasites. This is to be considered a noninfectious stage and may last three days or up to twenty-eight days. After this period, the daughter parasites hatch and enter the water column looking for their first host. Once on a host, the life cycle of C. irritans has come full circle. Typically, if they do not find a host within 24 hrs they will perish.

We recommend the use of UV Sterilization for preventative maintenance as well as the first line of defense against unwanted inhabitants. C. irritans usually requires additional forms of treatment aside from UV Sterilization.

One way UV Sterilization may work by itself is in conjunction with a bare-bottom quarantine system. It is recommended to offer hiding places or ‘comfort zones’ to reduce over-all stress. Moreover, the ‘comfort zones’ allow an infected host to better focus on recovery. Smoothed surfaced décor such as PVC Pipe is a commonly used when providing hiding places and ‘comfort zones’. The bare-bottom aquarium and PVC are easy to clean and rid of C. irritans while the UV Sterilizer takes care of the rest.

Do you need a regular pump along with this uv pump? Is this in addition to or in replacement of the pump that came with my tank? Thanks.
By Customer Service on September 27, 2012

Answer:
Lauren,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a UVP-9. The UVP-9 has a top-mounted pump and does not require an additional pump for operation. Water is drawn through the lower sides of the unit, passes by the UV Bulb and exits past the motor on top.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

i have a few questions about the uvp-9 i just installed.
1. i use additives for my plants will this unit make them ineffective?
2.where do u get the replacement pre- filter for the pump?
3. the box and manual state the top of the unit must stay above the water level. with lots of!!!!!!!!!! . i thought it was completely submersible??
By Customer Service on October 29, 2012

Answer:
Hello Dave,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a UVP-9.

The UV unit will not effect the additives you use, unless you are adding living microbial life; beneficial bacteria or phytoplankton.

If you are in need of a replacement pre-filter please give us a call during normal business hours and we'll help with you acquire a replacement.

The illustration you are referring to is if you would like to use the Venturi Line for added oxygenation. The Venturi Line feature is optional. The unit is completely submersible and we do not feel added oxygenation in a planted aquarium is very beneficial. Extra aeration will compromised/drop your dissolved CO2 levels.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Is this a JBL Submariner Pump?
By Customer Service on May 23, 2012

Answer:
Greetings Spi,

AquaTop's UVP-9 is similar to JBJ's Submariner unit. We do offer an improved version on the UVP-9 called the UVE-9. Below is a link for the new and improved unit.

Does the black valve lower the flow rate? If not how do you lower it so the filter can work?
By Customer Service on May 29, 2012

Answer:
Hello Shaquele,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a UVP-9. The included Black Valve does allow for the flow rate to be adjusted.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

I recently purchased a UVP-9 Sterilizing pump. Does my tank still require my old filter or can I use only the UVP-9?
Thank you
By Customer Service on December 5, 2012

Answer:
The UVP-9 sterilizing pump will not replace your current filtration setup. This pump is designed as a stand-alone UV sterilizer and will not offer additional filtration to your tank. However, you will have clear water!

What is the clear plastic hose, that mounts on to the blue valve used for? Can the pump be completely submerged?
By Customer Service on December 5, 2012

Answer:
The clear plastic hose that is supplied with the UVP-9 sterilizing pump is an optional Venturi line that will allow you to further oxygenate your water. The pump is also completely submersible; however, if you are using the Venturi line, you will need to keep the top portion of the line above water so that oxygen can be supplied to the UV pump.

Thank you!

If i choose not to use the venturi feature, can I close the air valve and completely submerge the pump?

By Customer Service on June 8, 2012

Answer:
Hello Will,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding AquaTop's UVP-9. If you decide you do not want to use the Venuri Line you can close the air valve completely and fully submerge the unit. The Venturi Line is optional for use and if the unit is ran without it the overall performance will not be affected.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

This is filling my tank with microbubbles. How do I stop this?
By Customer Service on July 16, 2012

Answer:
Hello,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding micro-bubbles produced by a UVP-9. The micro-bubbles are being produced due to the use of the Venturi-Line. The Venturi-Line is for added oxygenation. This is not a bad thing but we understand it may not be visually appealing. The Air Line which is most likely above the water line can be removed and you can fully submerged the unit. It make take a moment but the micro-bubbles will stop being produced. Make sure the blue 'L-Shaped' plastic piece is completely under the water line.

If there is anything further we can do for you please let us know.

Can, I run this sideways in the sump? What is the air valve for?
Thanks,
Jason
By Customer Service on March 25, 2012

Answer:
Greetings Jason,

The UVP-9 can be mounted horizontally in your sump. The Air Valve is actually a Venturi Line which is optional for use.

If you have any further question please do not hesitate to ask,

I just bought a AquaTop UV Sterilizing UVP-9. I noticed that if the top air inlet is loos you get massive micro bubbles. If its closed it does not suck air. I have a reef tank. How do i adjust this?
By Customer Service on April 3, 2012

Answer:
Submerge the unit if you don't want to use the Venturi Line feature.

By Nanci from Ogden, UT on August 13, 2012
Hi,

I just bought a UVP-9 sterilizing pump and have a question. I read the instruction manual and there is a contradiction.

One of the illustrations shows the pump with the majority of the pump submerged up to the blue part near the top. Yet in the literature it states it is completely submersible. I would like to place it horizontally at the bottom of my tank to hide it. But I am not sure if this will work based on the pictures in the handout that came with the pump.

By Customer Service on August 13, 2012

Answer:
Hello Nanci,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a UVP-9.

You can install the unit horizontally without interfering with the unit’s performance.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Hello I been using the UVP-9 Sterilizing Pump for 4 days , really nice water crystal clear on a 10 gallon tank. But i had notice that my water heater i had to turn it off because it went up to 84* F , is this common that will heat up your water a little. do i have to keep the pump on all day or can be turn on every certain of time?.

thanks
By Customer Service on September 18, 2012

Answer:
Hello Yasniel,

We have received your recent product inquiry regarding a UVP-9. We understand you have noticed an increase in water temperature while running a UVP-9. We expect this to happen but a degree possibly by two degrees.

You noted " i had to turn it off because it went up to 84* F."

This is not normal and moreover 84 degrees is on the high side for the average aquarium. The reason for this is the size of the unit. The UVP-9 is pretty large for a 10 gallon aquarium. Typically this unit would be installed on a larger aquarium such as a 60 gallon and the heat transference would be minimal.

We offer smaller units; 3W, 5W and 7W

These smaller units require less space inside the aquarium and will less heat. They will produce the same results and might be better suited for a 10 gallon aquarium.

If your continue to use the UVP-9 we recommend using it when you feel it is necessary. The unit does not have to run 24 hours a day.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Perfect UV sterilizer
March 12, 2014
I made the right choice buying this UV sterilizer. I had not seen anymore ich from coming back and attaching to the fishes. It works well and quiet. I had to treat my tank for cyano bacteria which I couldn't run the UV while treating but I need to run air pump to the tank of the of the deplition of the oxygen. My air pump went bad so I removed the bulb from the UV and run the UV with air adjustment on top and that works great. Well made and well built. Recommended!
Pros:
Well built. Quiet.
Cons:
None.

I started to care for some badly neglected tanks at a care home for dementia patients they were totally out of control with algae . I put on of these in one tank and within a few days there was zero new algae growth and it helped clear up the water super fast. I purchased a second one with the same results. The patients now can see the fish and love to sit in front of the tanks for hours. I plan to add them to three more tanks as funds permit.
Pros:
simple rugged easy to start up and clean
Cons:
none

UVP9 Critique
December 6, 2013
This is the 2nd UV Pump I have had, the 1st unit worked GREAT up until I dropped it and it landed on it's head - not good. Had air/water mixture problems with 2nd unit, excessive air bubbles was generated in tank plus unit was very noisy. Called TruAQUA and talked to Service Rep/Tech - was told that the top blue colored fitting needed to be submerged, this is the opposite of what the instructions that came with the unit says, in fact the instructions say "Warning, Do Not Install Below Water Line". I covered the fitting with water and it ceased bubbling and is very quiet. Why the Instructions WARNING?
Pros:
TRUAQUA reps very nice and helpful! Asked me to call back if I continued to have a problem.
Cons:
Conflict with installation instructions.

This UV Sterilzer was purchased for my Son's saltwater tank in hope's of helping to remove Ich from his tank. I placed the order over the phone and was told it would ship that afternoon, much to my surprize the item arrived the next morning. What great service! The UV sterilizer seems to be working well!

Good for the price
February 20, 2013
I build computers so I'm used to items being really tough and durable. The plastic on this seems to be lower quality. The elbow for the Venturi valve is not screwed in and can come off easily. The outlet valve has to be at the water line when you turn it on so it does sort of need to be primed if it is not. Now don't get me wrong, this is a good unit for the price. It acts as a mechanical filter, UV filter, and an adjustable powerhead. If you have some spare intake tubing from a smaller HOB filter you could even mod it to have a spray bar.

October 23, 2012
it's a good filter; the water flow is quite strong, but the filter volume is quite important so it's not adapted for small tank (under 60 gallons) I would say. the additional air system can be quite noisy. in general, the water gets clearer yes.

Excellent product
September 5, 2012
Works great. 2 days after installing my water was crystal clear. Only problem I've found is that it's a little loud under the water. Can't hear it outside the tank, but for high stress fish it's fairly loud under the water (press your ear to the tank and you'll see). If you've just got some rainbows or other easy keepers not a big deal. My german rams didn't appreciate it though.

Great Performance, Greater Value!
March 10, 2012
My 29 gal BioBube was persistently turbid - slightly but enough to be annoying - despite the built-in filtration system and frequent and regular water changes. So I decided to try UV. Frankly, the Aquatop products are priced so far below the competition, that I was skeptical, but I first bought one of the back-of-tank filter untis for my quarantine tank, and it works perfectly, so I went ahead with a submersible unit for my BioCube. Short answer: two days after installing it, my water is crystal clear. I am highly impressed. Good Stuff ... Cheap! Jim R.

Great Product
March 5, 2012
This product is plug and play to use a computer term. You can remove it from the box and install it without any hassle except how to hide it being a large unit. I have a 50 gallon tank with great lighting which has been causing serious algae blooms. It was a real hassle trying to control it. I used chemical warfare but was afraid of the long term affects on my fish. Looking for a different solution, I added polishing pads to my Fluval which worked for a while and then bang, another uncontrolable bloom. With this I decided to look for a UV solution. I saw the pictures posted on this site showing the effectiveness, which appeared too good to be true quite honestly, but I bought the product and kept my fingers crossed. Well this has turned out to be a great purchase. After two days my tank was as clear as when I first set it up. This product does a wonderful job. I still can hardly believe it.

Internal UV pump UVP 9 watt
November 22, 2011
I purchaced this pump to clear up a algae bloom that had persisted for weeks. REALLY, within 3 days my 29 gallon was super clear. I have had no previous experience with uv sterilizers but i gotta say that i am now convinced of thier effectivness. This unit is large, a little noisey, and the directions leave something to be desired. However, it actually works and does the job really fast. Also, on some other sites I have read reviews that this unit has electrocuted people and livestock so I'am kind of afaid of that but so far so good. On that issue though I have recieved two very small shocks upon touching the water since I have been using the unit but I can't say from what specifically it came from... All in all though my water has never been this clear. In fact I just bought the CF400 canister filter with the built in UV sterilizer for a 55 gallon that I am setting up. I will review that unit once it is operating. So far I am very happy with Aqua Top products for thier effectivness and affordability. I mean it when I say I love Aqua Top!
